How many MDF sheets should you buy?

See why dividing areas is not enough, using two pieces that require two sheets. Calculate the layout before buying.

Area division is only a lower bound

Take a 1,000 × 1,000 mm sheet and two 600 × 600 mm squares without margins. The pieces total 720,000 mm², below the sheet’s 1,000,000 mm², suggesting one sheet by area alone.

They cannot fit side by side: 600 + 600 = 1,200 mm along either axis. Even without kerf, you need two sheets. An area bound does not solve placement.

Include margins, kerf and grain

A 2,750 × 1,850 mm sheet with 10 mm margins loses 0.0916 m² at its edges: 5.0875 − 4.9959 m². Internal cuts consume additional material.

At an illustrative R$245 per sheet, two sheets cost R$490 in material. Labor, delivery, edge banding, taxes and supplier discounts are excluded.

Prepare your purchase with a complete plan

Enter the pieces and calculate every sheet. Check quantities, rotation and offcuts. Save the project before changing material so you can compare options without losing the list.

The 600 × 400 × 300 mm wall niche has sides, a base, a top and a back: five pieces. Increase quantities to see when another sheet is needed. Free supports 20 expanded pieces and 3 sheets.
